Selecting the Right Youth Boating Program for your Child

Here’s a short list of factors to consider when selecting a boating program for your child:

Age: Most youth boating programs will provide age requirements or guidelines. If not, contact them for their recommendation on the appropriate ages for the program.

Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced can make quite a difference on the water. Be sure to check the program details for information on the desired skill level of your child to ensure a good match prior to the starting the program.

Types of Classes: Boating offers many different types of experiences on the water from sailing to canoeing to power boating, watersports and more. There’s no better way to find out what you’ll like best than to try them all.

Days/Times: Spend a little time thinking about the timing that works best for you and your child. Some boating programs offer all day or weeklong experiences, while others offer shorter programs spread out over a period of weeks or days. Find the one that works best for you and your family.

Costs: The costs of youth boating programs are typically competitive with other youth activities. If you are in need of financial support, call the program manager and ask about a scholarship. Some programs offer a way for youth to participate at a lower cost or for free.

Bad Weather Policy: Make sure you ask before you drop your child off. Many programs have on-shore activities for stormy days; however, it is critical to gain an understanding of your specific program’s policy so you can plan accordingly.
