Tips for Safe Fishing:

  • Look behind you before casting so you won't catch your hook on a tree, power line, or another person.
  • Bring along extra safety items such as water, flashlights, maps, and a cell phone or radio. More safe fishing tips.
  • Always wear shoes, whether on shore, in a boat, or wading in the water. Stray hooks or sharp rocks, could cut your bare feet. In a boat, wear shoes designed to keep your feet from slipping.
  • Don't put your hand inside the fish's mouth to retrieve a deep hook. Use a hook remover.
  • For your little anglers -- use simple tackle. Children who have not fished before will have the most fun and fewer tangles with spincast tackle. Click here for more on fishing with kids.
