Fisherman's Guide to Being Green

DiscoverBoating.com offers boaters quick tips to reduce their carbon 'wake'. Check out our brand new section on Green Boating.

Be An Eco-Friendly Fisherman
  • Protect marine life by properly disposing of monofilament fishing line at nearby marine accessories stores and shore side recycling locations. Visit www.fishinglinerecycling.org for a list of facilities in your area.
  • Use lead-free weights, sinkers, lures, and jig heads whenever possible.
  • Plastic lures can be harmful or even fatal to fish and other wildlife that swallow them. Use soft baits and lures that are biodegradable.
  • Use live bait caught from the same body of water that it will be used in, or, purchase bait from a local bait shop.
  • Don't take home more fish than you can eat! Always use good Catch and Release and Selective Harvest practices to help preserve supplies for generations to come.
  • Visit RecycledFish.org to learn how you can become a more eco-friendly fisherman. Take their pledge to become a steward of our lakes, streams and oceans!
