Aerial photography helps you navigate unfamiliar harbors

One of the premiere destinations on the Eastern seaboard is Atlantic City, New Jersey. With easy access from Absecon Inlet the marina district of A.C. is booming with excitement.

But as always when entering an unfamiliar harbor (especially for the first time) it can be a bit nerve wracking while trying to navigate. Fortunately many software navigation packages (including Maptech's Digital Chartkit) provide fantastic aerial photography to assist the captain's efforts. Now the inlet here is not that difficult to navigate but without ever being here it was very comforting to see the buildings and bridges from above in the form of a photograph. In some areas the water color would suggest shoaling areas or deeper channels. Caution should be given here since many of these photographs are dated and proper use of updated charts and on-board soundings should be used to guide you into unfamiliar harbors. We did learn after entering the inlet, take notice to a red buoy fairly close to shore. Keep the entrance buoy to starboard to enter the deep water canal. The marina is located just past the US Coast Guard Station on the starboard side. The basin is dredged to eight feet at mean low water.

Once in your slip … you can hear the energy pumping from the outside entertainment deck. Trump Marina Hotel and Casino covers a 14+ acre tract, overlooking the magnificent Senator Frank S. Farley State Marina. The Marina's fabulous array of amenities include a 74,000+ square foot casino; over 700 guest rooms (including 150+ suites); seven restaurants; The Wave nightclub; a 462-seat showroom - The Shell; the 17,000 square foot Grand Cayman Ballroom; recreation deck complete with a health spa, outdoor pool, tennis and shuffleboard courts, basketball courts, jogging track; 50,000 square feet of meeting and function space; a nine-story parking garage with direct walk-through into the complex; with the marina being a public facility owned by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, managed by Trump Marina Associates.

The marina has over 640 floating slips that can accommodate vessels up to 300 feet in length. Being a high-tech facility, there is 24 hour / 7 day per week security for the marina patrons to ease your mind while gambling. If you bring along your Marinalife Membership Card you can obtain discounts on dockage ( 25% off Monday through Thursday), fuel (10% off) and purchases in the Docksider Store (20%). Make sure you ask for Dee James (be careful, there are two Dee 's at the marina) and she will guide you to the best activities that are happening during your stay. It's best to make reservations during the season by calling 800-876-4386 or hail the office on VHF Channel 65.
